| Wednesday 7 July 2010 | May Fayre fund share. We received a cheque for £83.51 towards our mower fund. We are grateful to the May Fayre committee for this donation. |
| Sunday 4 July 2010 | SPONSORS' DAY. What a great success this was! Despite what might generously be called "mixed" weather, our loyal band of sponsors turned out to watch a close match against Ipplepen CC, and to enjoy a superb Devon Cream Tea provided by Sheila Peck and Linda Leslie. A cheque for £150 was handed to captain Simon Hickey by Doug Cady, on behalf of the sponsors. The Club owes a debt of gratitude to all our generous supporters, and also particularly to Jim Peck, who organised both the fund-raising effort, and the event. |
| Sunday 6 June 2010 | DVCC vs Cavendish Cavaliers CC (home). Our first home match. Will the weather hold? Will the pitch be ready? We'll need volunteers to mow and roll over the next 10 days or so to get the square in tip-top order: contact Nick or Simon if you can lend a hand. |
| Sunday9 May 2010 | DVCC vs Lustleigh CC (away). We go to "England's prettiest village cricket ground" with probably our most youthful team for years. No less than 5 team members under 20. This is very promising, both for the future of the Club, and for our prospects in the match, have narrowly lost our first match at Harberton last week. Young limbs and keen eyesight must surely be a bonus! |
| Monday 3 May 2010 | Denbury May Fayre (update). The coconut shy was a great success this year: thanks to the efforts of the Gamble Family, Nick, Simon, Ian and Jim. We sold out of coconuts rather early, and shut up shop at around 3.15 pm, having taken circa £250 towards village good causes. Well done all, and thanks for your efforts! The Club is in line to receive a much-needed injection of funds from the proceeds of the May Fayre, which will go into our mower fund. |
| Sunday 2 May 2010 | DVCC vs Harberton CC (away). First match of the season! Players are still needed - please update your availability right away. |
| Tuesday 20 April 2010 | 2nd Net Practice. The net's been christened, the weather's set fair: ideal for some more crucial pre-season practice! Starts at 6.00 pm, informal, kit provided (bring a box if you have one). Thereafter, every Tuesday evening, same time, same place. Additional practice can be easily arranged - contact Nick (see contacts page). |
| Monday 12 April 2010 | Net Practice Sessions. The first evening practice session will be held on Thursday 15 April, from 6.00 pm onwards, followed by Tuesday 20 April. We hope to be able to offer Tuesday and Thursday sessions until the season is underway, and then at least one weekly practice day after that. Watch this space for further details. |
| Sunday 11 April 2010 | New Net Facility. The Club's new permanent outdoor net was finally completed today, in time for the new practice schedule ahead of (and during) the forthcoming season. The net needs no setting up (apart from a set of stumps), and can be used right away. Details of practice nights to follow. |
| Wednesday 12 August 2009 | New Net Cage. The kit of parts for assembling our new net facility at the Playing Fields finally arrived. The tubes and fittings are of impressively heavy construction. Although too late for use this season, we intend to concrete in the steel sockets in preparation for an early start to practice in 2010. Stand by for a working party request! |
| Saturday 6 June 2009 | Home Sweet Home! Our home season should have got off to a flying start with the first match against The Offsiders CC (a touring side). Unfortunately the weather turned against us - and how! However - the pitch is prepared, and looking good - and we were promised a barbecue summer...weren't we? Fingers crossed for Thursday 11 June (v Harberton CC). |
| Friday 5 June 2009 | May Fayre Grant. We are grateful to the May Fayre committee for their support - this year providing a grant towards the cost of our new net cage. |
| Wednesday 3 June 2009 | New Net Facility. The Club have been successful in obtaining grants towards the cost of our new outdoor practice net. The base is already in place, and the net "cage" is on order, and should be with us soon. We intend to establish a weekly net practice evening once this is in place. Watch this space for details. |
| Tuesday 2 June 2009 | Why Not Join Our Club? The Club is looking for new members - official! So if you're a cricketer - current, past or aspiring, and you live in the Denbury area, please get in touch. We're particularly keen to recruit cricketers who want to do more than just turn up and play: i.e. helping with grounds preparation and generally getting involved. Feel free to get in touch for a chat (see contact page). |
| Monday 4 May 2009 | Coconut Cricket! The annual Denbury May Fayre - and once again we ran the coconut shy. This year the weather stayed fair (if fresh), and we had a very successful day. A big crowd stayed all afternoon, and cleared us out of coconuts well before the scheduled finish: valuable funds raised for local good causes - including (we hope) your cricket club. |
| Sunday 3 May 2009 | First fixture of 2009. Our season kicks off (as always) with an away fixture at Harberton CC's beautiful ground. The fixtures page is now available with all this year's arranged matches. |
Sunday 3 March 2009 |
Pre-Season Net Practice. Net practice begins on Sunday 3 March, from 11am to 12 noon, at Seale-Hayne Gymnasium. All members and prospective players are welcome. Please bring £3.00. No special equipment is necessary, apart from indoor trainers or similar. |
2009: New Year, New Season! |
New Members Welcome! This year the Club kicks off a determined campaign to attract new members. As some of our seniors decide to hang up their pads (or worse, take up golf), and one or two of our juniors disappear on gap years, or move on to more serious league cricket, opportunity knocks! If you have played in the past, or if you'd like to, please get in touch (see our contact page). We are a friendly club, and there are opportunities for any player who's keen to play, at any ability level. Junior players are also very welcome (with parental support). Look forward to hearing from you! |
| Boxing Day 2008 | Boxing Day Auction. Once again we supported the annual auction at The Union, and it supported us, with a donation to funds of £135. Our sincere thanks go to Zoe Allen and Will Smith for running the show, and to those DVCC members who supported the event with either their presence or their presents! |
Tuesday 9 September 2008 |
Social. Look out for an informal end-of-season get-together in early October. An email will be winging its way to you as soon as the date is finalised. Probably just a pint and a chat at the Union to round things off (and another chance to moan about the weather). |
| Sunday 7 September 2008 | Season Close. The end of another DVCC season, this one of mixed fortunes. The old enemy - the weather - gained the upper hand once more. Of a total of 31 matches arranged, 17 had to be cancelled; and of our 15 home matches, we were only able to play 7. However you look at it, this was appalling bad fortune. Of the 14 matches that were played, we won 6, lost 5 and drew 3 (at least one of those draws caused by bad weather). Still, the season ended on a high note with a convincing win and a light-affected draw in the twenty/20 knockout at Ipplepen. Well done all! |
| Saturday 12 July 2008 | Rain Stopped Play. Another cancellation as the summer of wet weather lays waste to our fixtures calendar once again. It seemed unlikely that last year's disaster would be repeated: but on the evidence so far 2008 is shaping up to be even worse. Eleven matches have had to be abandoned so far. In fact, of our total of 16 planned home games, only 4 have been played to date, with just 4 more left before we lose the use of the ground for this year. A 50% success rate is the best we can now hope for. |
| Monday 7 July 2008 | Grant received. The Club is grateful to the Denbury May Fayre committee, who have made a grant of £125 towards club funds from the proceeds of the fayre, in which we took part. The sum will be put towards a fund for the purchase of grounds maintenance equipment. |
| Sunday 11 April 2008 | Record score for DVCC. A famous victory for the Club against Lustleigh CC, on the occasion of our first match there for several years. 329 for 9 is far and away the highest total ever recorded by DVCC in a 40-over match. We won by 182 runs. Congratulations to centurion Matthew Hickey (115 ret'd), and high scorers Simon Hickey (89), Ian Fraser (58 n.o.) and James Durban (22). |
| Friday 9 April 2008 | New practice net now completed. The Club's long-awaited permanent net base has at last been installed at the Playing Fields, adjacent to the Green Hut. We now have a great opportunity to not only improve our own technique, but to offer a coaching facility to prospective cricketers from the village and environs. This has been made possible as a result of fund-raising efforts over the last two years or so. Look out for net practice announcements in due course! |
| Monday 5 April 2008 | Denbury May Fayre. The Club played its part in this annual event, this time by manning the Coconut Shy. The day was judged a great success, with over £300 taken and 200-odd coconuts handed out. DVCC is once more in line to receive a share of the proceeds, which we understand were a record £7,000+. Thanks to those who made the effort to help. |
| Availability 2008 please | Online Availability - Now Booking! Please let Nick have your availability by clicking on the availability page here on the website. Remember - you don't have to commit to the whole season straight away - just the first few games will be helpful. You can re-visit the availability page as often as you like to add further matches once you know your movements - or even to change entries you've already made (please don't leave it to the last minute to make changes though!). |
| Saturday 19 April 2008 | Barn Dance. We're repeating this event, as it was such a success last time. Details to be confirmed: but probably 8.00 start, Denbury Village Hall, buffet meal included. Tickets £10 per head (tbc). |
| Sunday 9 March 2008 | Winter Net Practice. More a "Spring" net practice this year! Usual venue - Seale-Hayne gymnasium, 11 am - 12 noon. £3.00 per head. (9, 16 and 30 March; 6, 13 and 20 April). Just turn up. |
| Saturday 1 March 2008 | Annual Prizegiving Dinner. This year's dinner will be held at Dainton Golf Club. Tickets cost £15.00, and are available from Nick (See Contact page for contact details). |
| Boxing Day 2007 | Charity Auction. This year's auction again broke records, with a total raised of some £800. Your cricket club received £136, which will assist with the purchase of equipment for the 2008 season. Our thanks go to Gerry Nield and his helpers for organising and running the event. |
| Monday 7 May | Denbury May Fayre. Once again we supported this village fundraiser by manning the Human Fruit Machine. The weather was, shall we say, challenging, and for a while we seemed to be paying out more than we took in. Nonetheless it was a good effort, and we were assisted by members of Denbury AFC. Next year we must definitely think of something new and different to apply our enthusiasm to (there's a rumour of a vacancy on the coconut shy ...)! |
| Wednesday 2 May | First Match Of The Season. Away to our old rivals, Harberton CC. Match lost by 3 runs. |
| Sunday 15 & 22 April | Net Practice at Seale-Hayne - Last Chance! These are the final two sessions before the season starts in earnest - the last chance to hone those batting and bowling skills! 11am - 12 noon. |
| Wednesday 4 April | Online Availability - Now Booking! Please let Nick have your availability by clicking on the availability page here on the website. Please do it ASAP. Remember - you don't have to commit to the whole season straight away - just the first few games will be helpful. You can re-visit the availability page as often as you like to add further matches once you know your movements - or even to change entries you've already made (please don't leave it to the last minute to make changes though!). |
| Monday 12 March
|
Committee Meeting. Our pre-season committee meeting will be held at 8.00 pm at the Union Inn. |
| Sunday 4 March | Nets. Our net practice sessions
get under way at Seale-Hayne Gymnasium. The dates are:- 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th March; 1st, 15th, 22nd April. (No net on Easter Sunday). |
| Saturday 3 February 2007 | Annual prizegiving dinner. A
very successful and well-attended evening at the Union Inn. Our retiring
Captain, Peter Colclough made a speech summarising the achievements of The
Club on this, the 10th anniversary of its foundation. He also presented
the awards as follows:- Most wickets: Simon Hickey. Most runs: Peter Colclough. Most improved young player: James Colclough. Outstanding individual performance: Richard Longstreet. The members present voted for the Clubman Of The Year award, which went to Simon Hickey. |
| Monday 4 December 2006
|
Committee Meeting. Our next meeting will be held at 8.00 pm at the Union Inn. |
| Friday 10 November 2006 |
AGM AND SOCIAL EVENING. Peter
Colclough retired from the position of Club Captain, having
served in this position since the inauguration of the club. Simon
Hickey was elected as the new Club Captain. All other club officials
will continue in their existing roles. Club members and their partners held a very successful social evening, culminating in a quiz which was won by "The Slips". |
| Saturday 16 September | Last match of 2006 vs Spreyton CC. Lovely venue - the home of Uncle Tom Cobley (allegedly). The village pub is named in his honour. Early start time 1.30 PM. |
| August 2006 | New members. Welcome to new playing members for 2006, Alan Holmes; Ed and Jack Costerton; John and Charlie Stocks. We also enjoyed cameo appearances from Steve Arnold, Bill Eaton and Steve Smith. It's good to see membership rising again: we've also had expressions of interest or intent from several additional prospective players for 2007. |
| August 2006 | Break-in at The Playing Fields. Our machinery shed was broken into, with some slight damage, but fortunately nothing stolen. Security has been improved. |
| Thursday 27 July | RIP Staverton CC. Our regular opponents from Staverton failed to turn up for this evening fixture. We have since been informed that the club has disbanded. This is such a shame, particularly as they have a brand new pavilion just completed after last winter's fire. We hope they get going again. Meanwhile we'll need to find a new opponent for the usual three fixtures in 2007. |
| Monday 17 July | Match cancelled. Please note that the fixture against Malpas CC is cancelled. |
| Wed 3 May | The Season Begins! Our first match, against Harberton Cricket Club. This is an away game. See the fixtures page for details of our match schedule. Don't forget to update your availability on the new availability page, if you haven't already done so. |
| Tue 2 May
|
Committee Meeting. Our meeting will be held at 8.00 pm at the Church House Inn, Torbryan, unless otherwise advised. |
| Mon 1 May | Denbury May Fayre. Once again DVCC will be hosting the "Human Fruit Machine" at the Fayre on Denbury Green. All members are urged to come and lend a hand, and join in the fun. We're raising funds for a number of good causes - including your Cricket Club! |
| Thu 27 April | A Voice From The Past. We received
the following communication from Danny Ward, a Denbury Cricket Club member
from the Old Days ... thought you might like to read it:-
"I've just noticed how successful you have been in
resurrecting DVCC. As a young boy I, and several members of my family
played for the original team. I went on to play for Abbotskerswell and
South Devon before leaving the area and completing my cricket career in
Taunton. I will always remember bringing down a Taunton Rugby Club
side to play against a Denbury team and having a great afternoon's fun.
Once again it's good to see the village team prospering and I hope to
get to see you play one day soon. Please pass on my regards to both
George and Mavis Gooding: George was always encouraging me in both
my cricket and, more especially, rugby development when I was a schoolboy. |
| Wed 26 April | Availability. We now have a new and much improved availability section to our website. Much blood sweat and tears have been shed by our IT team (!) to bring this sophisticated feature to life, so Playing Members ... please use it! |
| Sats 1 & 8 April | Pitch Preparation. Please contact Simon Hickey if you are able to help. |
| Mon 6 March
|
Committee Meeting. Our meeting will be held at 8.00 pm at the Church House Inn, Torbryan. |
| Sun 19 February | Practice Nets. Net sessions are booked at Seale-Hayne gymnasium, Newton Abbot. Every Sunday until 9 April (except Mothering Sunday, 26 March), time: 11 am - 12 noon. All members are welcome, as are prospective new members. Cost £3 per session (£1 for juniors). |
| Sat 4 February 2006 | Annual Presentation Dinner. The annual dinner was held at Dainton Golf Club, this time with a new format, sans disco. This left time for a more relaxed meal and presentation, and by consensus will be repeated next year. The evening was very well attended, and raised a total of £206 for our kit fund. |
| Boxing Day 2005 | Boxing Day Charity Auction. The annual Boxing Day charity auction was held at the Union Inn, and was, once again, a great success. Causes supported were the New Village Hall fund and your very own DVCC. Nick Leslie is pleased to report another great result, and a much-needed injection of finance. Sincere thanks to Gerry, Jim and Nick, for organising the auction, and to the good folk of Denbury for their generosity. |
| Mon 26 September
|
Committee meeting. All committee members are requested to attend an important end-of-season meeting. The venue is unusual, so take note! Jolly Sailor Inn, East Ogwell 8.15 pm. |
| Sun 18 September | Season over. Our final match, against Spreyton Cricket Club, brings our season to a close. What a shame we lost! But what a lovely ground, and what a friendly bunch of people! Excellent hospitality - especially at the Tom Cobley, both for tea and after the match. We shall definitely return! |
| Sun 21 August | Match Cancelled. We have been forced to cancel the away match against Cockington CC. This much regretted decision was made inevitable by the sudden shrinkage of available players from 12 to 5! Sincere apologies to our intended opponents. |
| Wed 20 July | Extra Friendly Fixture. We have an additional friendly (replacing the published practice evening) against Newton Town Football Club. This will be a fun-filled fixture, with specially relaxed rules (for people more used to a big squashy ball!) Thanks to John Turner, formerly of Torquay United and now Licensee of the Jolly Sailor at Ogwell, who has kindly offered to provide a free buffet supper after the match. |
| Wed 6 July | May Fair Acknowledgement. Sincere thanks to the May Fair committee, and to all those who made the Fair such a success. DVCC have now received a cheque for the princely sum of £308.21, which will hopefully enable us to proceed with the practice net project. |
| Mon 13 June | Cricket Practice and Fun For All. The Club will be holding fun practice sessions at the Playing Fields for members and non-members alike on the following Wednesdays: 22 June; 6 July; 20 July; 24 August. All are welcome: feel free to come along and have a go. Parents - bring your aspiring youngsters - we'll provide soft balls for under-twelves. |
| Sat 11 June
|
More sponsorship! Many thanks to Jim Peck, staunch supporter and occasional wicket keeper for The Club, for agreeing to join our growing band of ball sponsors. It's not too late to help - we still need sponsors for several games. Please see our contact page if you'd like to be a sponsor. |
| Tue 7 June
|
Meeting for all members. Committee members, players and volunteers are invited to an informal open meeting to discuss plans for the future, including membership, funds, the ground, and the provision of services like teas, pitch preparation and fund raising. Meet at the Union Inn at 8.30 pm. Please respond to nick@denburycricket.co.uk. |
| Thu 2 June | Sponsors Step Forward. Offers of sponsorship have been received from Steve Bassett, Brian Clatworthy and Bernie Duggan, who have each kindly offered to sponsor a match ball for a forthcoming home game. Our sincere thanks to these gentlemen, who will shortly receive details of their designated match, and their invitations to tea. |
| Tue 17 May
|
Sponsor Your Village Cricket Club. Why not sponsor a ball for one of DVCC's home matches? £15 will buy us a ball for the game, and guarantee you a warm welcome if you choose to come and support us; an excellent cricket tea at the ground; and an acknowledgement in our fixtures list. See our contact page, or the Village Diary, to get in touch. |
| Sat 14 May
|
H-Day Fast Approaching! Only a few days left to get our home ground up to scratch before our first home game on 22 May. Those of you who played away at Harberton on 8 May now know how much we have to do to come even close to the standard some of our opponents have already achieved. There will be a pitch prep morning on Saturday 14 May (from 10 am): please contact Nick or Simon if you are able to help. |
| Sat 7 May
|
Good News! The Pitch Fairy has, yet again, favoured us with a visit , and a new water pipe has magically appeared, all the way to the square, to enable us to water the wicket (a vital requirement in dry weather). Thanks to all those who prayed for a miracle. Let's hope the Fairy's on hand to prepare the wicket ready for the first home match, on 22 May, against Marldon. |
| Mon 2 May
|
The Denbury May Fayre was held on Denbury Village Green. The Cricket Club offered villagers and visitors the opportunity to try their luck against the Human Fruit Machine. Thanks to all those who got involved in the spirit of the thing. It seemed an unlikely concept, but in the end worked amazingly well. We had a lot of fun (so did numerous local children - of all ages); the real ale was most efficacious; the weather was kind; and, most importantly, we raised loads of money for good local causes (including our own). |
| Sat 23 April | Gang Mowers Refurbished. The Club's Ransomes gang mowers returned from a comprehensive - and expensive - refurbishment, and were re-assembled, with much cursing and bloodied knuckles, by Nick Leslie and Simon Hickey. It is hoped that these will now enjoy a new lease of life (the mowers!) and will help us keep the outfield up to scratch. |
| Sun 17 April | Indoor Nets. Indoor nets finished with a final session at Seale-Hayne. This year's nets were very successful, with a good attendance on all six occasions. The earlier time slot (11am - 12 noon), and the two post-Easter sessions were generally felt to be a popular enhancement. The venue, as before, was convenient for most, and we hope that it may still be available in 2006. |
| Mon 11 April | New DVCC website launched. Sections giving information about the Club, its foundations, its officials and contacts were operational at launch. Further sections added soon after include an up-to-date team sheet area, where members can find out which matches they are picked to play, and who their team-mates will be; a fixtures section giving details of all forthcoming matches for the season, with a page in printable format; and a news page ... you're reading it! Future enhancements may include details of away grounds, with directions; (perhaps - if someone can be persuaded to write them) reports of matches played; a social diary; and possibly a rogues' gallery of photographs. All suggestions welcome. |
| Sun 10 April | The Hut Gets A Makeover. The tin hut at the Playing Fields is a Green Hut once more. A party of DVCC members took time out from their weekend r & r to attack the old black hut, and transform it into a sleek British Racing Green monument to village cricket days of yore. Weather, unfortunately, prevented completion of the project: so there's more still to do. All volunteers welcome (to finish top-coating the end gable, and tidy up the woodwork before our home season starts). |
| Sun 3 April
|
DVCC sponsorship. DVCC were fortunate to receive a cheque for £300 in sponsorship from Fujitsu PLC. This sum, received on behalf of the Club by Malcolm Senior, will be put towards the cost of a new practice net to be installed at the Playing Fields. The committee expresses its gratitude to Fujitsu PLC for their generosity. |
